The information was incorrect in an earlier version of this story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration is proposing not to renew a $64 million payment to Howard University. The money, a one time payment made to build the Howard University Hospital, is no longer needed with construction complete, the administration said in its budget proposal released Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Howard is the nation\u2019s only federally chartered historically Black college or university (HBCU).<\/p>\n<p>The budget proposal comes days after Trump signed an order establishing a White House initiative on HBCUs to \u201cdeliver high-quality education to a growing number of students.\u201d Earlier this week,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/trump-hbcu-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the president also told NewsNation<\/a>\u00a0that HBCUs should not be concerned about federal funding cuts to their budgets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got them more money than they ever dreamt possible, and they\u2019re in great shape now,\u201d Trump said, referring to the 2019 bipartisan bill that permanently provides more than $250 million a year to HBCUs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have long-term financing,\u201d he added. \u201cNobody did that but Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, HBCUs receive significantly less funding than predominantly white institutions. Black land-grant universities have been underfunded by more than $12 billion over the past 30 years, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/susanadams\/2022\/02\/01\/for-hbcus-cheated-out-of-billions-bomb-threats-are-latest-indignity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 Forbes analysis<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The University is aware of the Trump Administration\u2019s proposed funding recommendations for Howard University\u2014one of the nation\u2019s premier historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs)\u2014as part of the discretionary funding levels for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026,&#8221; Howard University said in a statement to The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a leading HBCU, Howard, has since its founding in 1867, cultivated talent, unlocked opportunity, and contributed mightily to every sector of American life.
