NYU\u2019s Grossman School of Medicine placed No. 2 out of 154 medical schools on a ranking that ordered institutions based on their apparent diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, rewarding those that \u201c<\/span>resist the tide of wokeness<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201c<\/span>Medical School Excellence Index<\/span><\/a>,\u201d published last month by new medical watchdog group Do No Harm, evaluated schools based on merit statistics \u2014 such as average GPA and MCAT scores \u2014 and practices that counter popular DEI efforts, such as tiered grading and competitive academic clubs. The ranking also used Elon Musk\u2019s artificial intelligence model Grok 4 Heavy to grade each school\u2019s mission statement. Grossman earned an \u201cA\u201d with a score of 92 out of 100, tying with The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan Medical School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement to WSN, DNH research director Ian Kingsbury said that Grossman earned its second-place rank primarily for having the highest average MCAT score nationally. In 2024, admitted Grossman students had a median MCAT score of <\/span>523 out of 528<\/span><\/a> and undergraduate GPA of 3.98 out of 4.0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTheir exceptionally high average score along with not having a DEI office outweighs the negatives of having a pass\/fail grading system,\u201d Kingsbury wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

In its report, DNH said that while DEI initiatives could address health disparities, too much emphasis on diversity \u201clowers standards and erodes trust in the medical profession.\u201d The organization claimed that DEI offices \u201cchill speech\u201d and force members to \u201cadopt specific beliefs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ranking praised Grossman for not having a dedicated DEI office, but took off some points because the school \u2014 along with its parent system NYU Langone Health and affiliate NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine \u2014 has an <\/span>institutional statement<\/span><\/a> promoting\u00a0 \u201cinclusivity, belonging, and respect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NYU Grossman Long Island earned a \u201cB\u201d over its moderate commitment to DEI. City University of New York School of Medicine \u2014 which has trained one in five Black doctors in New York City \u2014 received an \u201cF\u201d from DNH, Columbia University\u2019s medical school received a \u201cB\u201d and Cornell University\u2019s medical school received an \u201cA.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was DNH\u2019s inaugural set of rankings, drafted as part of its new Center for Accountability in Medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grossman admitted <\/span>99 MD candidates<\/span><\/a> for the class of 2028, with about equal numbers of male and female students. In 2018, it became the first medical school in the country to <\/span>implement full-tuition scholarships<\/span><\/a> for all students, in an effort to be more \u201c<\/span>inclusive<\/span><\/a>\u201d and prepare \u201cthe best possible physicians.\u201d Last year, the medical school supported $26.9 million in debt-free financial aid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after President Donald Trump began repealing DEI initiatives in January, NYU Langone reportedly faced pressure from in-house lawyers who <\/span>advised against<\/span><\/a> the use of words such as \u201cdiverse,\u201d \u201cmarginalized\u201d and\u00a0 \u201csystemic racism\u201d in marketing. A few weeks prior, NYU Langone also <\/span>denied gender-affirming care<\/span><\/a> to at least two patients under the age of 19 at the direction of one of Trump\u2018s executive orders.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecoming a great physician reflects some combination of natural ability and quality of training received,\u201d the DNH report said. \u201cSchools that embrace DEI and its attendant rigid ideological orthodoxies and social activism are derelict in their responsibility to prioritize open inquiry and technical expertise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
